BSBI Orchid Field Meeting June 2009SATURDAY 13th & SUNDAY 14th JUNE IRISH NORTH COAST (v.c. H 39 & 40) Leader: Paul Hackney It has been suggested that the Dactylorhiza purpurella populations in the NE of Ireland are referable to ssp. cambrensis. There is also some disputed suggestion that D. occidentalis may be present in this area. On this weekend meeting, we will examine populations at sites in the NE Antrim/N Londonderry area. Meet at 10.30 am on Saturday 13th at the National Trust car park at Whitepark Bay (GR D012437). This is at the west end of the bay, well signposted by the National Trust, just off to the seaward side of the A2 coast road about half way between Ballycastle and Bushmills. Meet 10am Sunday morning at Benone Tourist Information Centre. The Benone Tourist Complex is at C717362; – turn off A2 Coleraine to Limavady coast road (not the main inland route!) to the right about 1.5 km beyond (west of) the Umbra level crossing. The complex is signposted from the A2 turnoff. After turning off the A2, keep straight on the main roadway for about half a kilometre (don’t turn off a side road to the right) until you reach the large car park adjacent to the tourist information building at the end of this road.
