The commonest laburnum in Northern Ireland gardens: a hybrid of two European species - L. alpinum and L. anagyroides. The hybrid occurs both in the wild and has arisen spontaneously several times in cultivation. It is variable, often close to L. alpinum in its characteristics. It is usually fertile and produces abundant seed. In parts of Co. Londonderry it was planted as a hedging plant in the nineteenth century.
