Site Description
Description:
These are the most northwesterly exposures of Carboniferous rocks which crop out between Charleys Rock and Greencastle Point, south Co.Down (see also sites 'Americam Lane' and 'Greencastle Bay middle beach'). They protrude through the extensive area of beach sand and are heavily encrusted with barnacles. The rocks consist of thick to very thick beds of blue-grey oolitic limestone, sandy oolites and very calcareous sandstones. Cross-bedding and parallel laminations are common but lenticular pebble beds occur only very rarely and are usually less than 4cm thick.
