Site Description
Description:
Carrickbeg Rising is situated north of the road to Boho Churches at 80m amsl. The cave entrance is immediately above the rising, at the base of the limestone scarp south of the road. A 15m long boulder-collapse area leads to a large (3m wide by 5m high) stream passage with a sandy floor. This continues for 540m to a 15m phreatic section which, after a number of ducks finally sumps.

Beyond the phreatic section, 400m of passage similar to that downstream of the sump ends in a collapse chamber and tight rifts in thinly bedded limestone. The mainstream enters from an active sump which becomes impassable after a few metres. A muddy over- flow passage continues beyond the junction and leads to a larger sump, dived for approximately 120m at about -3m depth on a bearing of 210°. The passage size in this phreatic section is generally about 1.5m wide by 0.75m high.

About 250m from the entrance, Sump Inlet Passage enters from the west and ends in a sump after about 18m. The sump has been dived to a distance of 75m at a depth of -12m.
