| Highlights: | |
Tertiary basalt with zeolite minerals.
| Introduction: | |
This is a small active quarry in the Upper Basalt Formation. The area of principal mineralogical interest is an old part of the quarry near the entrance road and behind the quarry plant.
| Description: | |
The area comprises low quarry faces and an area of boulders and quarry rubble.
An olive-brown coloured, amygdaloidal basalt/andesite lava, often with clay alteration, contains stilbite, stellerite, chabazite and analcite.
Black basalt in the main quarry occasionally contains vesicles with thomsonite, apophyllite and gyrolite.
| Conclusions: | |
Since the initial site visit in 1997, the quarry owners have cleared and covered the area for use in manufacturing concrete blocks [Harry Foy, personal communication 1999]. Unfortunately the quarry is now of low interest.
