Site Description
Highlights:
Former copper mine; chalcopyrite in hydrothermal vein.
Introduction:
This site is located on the NW side of Tullydonnell village which is 6km east of Crossmaglen on the Newtownhamilton - Monaghan road. The owner of a modern bungalow built on the site - Mr Dennis Summer - recounted his experiences in 1995 when he fell 30m into the flooded mine shaft which caved in after heavy rain. This was between his bungalow and garage. He recovered many shaft timbers which subsequently floated to the surface. The shaft has since been properly capped. Mr Summer donated a small (6cm) specimen of dolomite-cemented brecciated greywacke containing chalcopyrite, presumably from the workings, to the Ulster Museum collections.
Description:
Shearing and clay gouge are presently visible in an excavation behind (north of) the house, but no metallic mineralization was observed. Slag material presumably from the former engine house forms a mound adjacent to the stream in front of the bungalow.
Conclusions:
The site is of historical interest, but is not worthy of designation as no mineralized spoil or bedrock is visible.
