Anisomeridium biforme (Borrer) R.C.Harris

Description: Common, but not colourfully conspicuous; look for this species on sheltered smooth-barked trees in hedgerows or along the edge of woodlands. The thin, white to icy-grey thallus pimpled with black, globose, almost completely immersed discs (perithecia <0.5mm diam.) or even smaller pycnidia (often with a little dot of jelly on the end) will be certain to attract attention. To get the correct scale, try dotting a blunt pencil on a white sheet of paper then view through a hand lens. This should eliminate any confusion with larger lookalikes. Occasionally, the mature discs fall out to leave pits.

Key Identification Features:

  • Small black dots on an icy-grey thallus
  • An epiphyte of smooth and mature bark mainly, not rough-barked trees.
