Lichens : Peltigerales : CollemataceaeLichens

Enchylium polycarpon (Hoffm.) Otálora, P.M.Jørg. & Wedin

Description: This blackish, tidily organised ‘jelly lichen’ often forms small rosettes (2-6cm diam.) over the surfaces of hard limestones. The lobes are thick, raised up in the centre and radiating but neatly spaced — almost overlapping or superimposed one on another — and unusually rich in discs (0.5-1.5mm diam.) which stand proud of the thallus. There are no isidia. Frequent in the west and central Ireland; rare elsewhere.

Key Identification Features:

  • Thallus usually of small rosettes (<7cm diam.), the lobes, thick, radiating, gently touching and crammed with discs towards the ends
  • On hard limestones generally.
