Site Description
Highlights:
The stratotype section of the Drumard Member of the Altagoan Formation occurs in the Drumard Water.

Description:
The stratotype section of the Drumard Member occurs in the Drumard Water from a ford, some 200m south of Gortnaskey Bridge, at H7951 9438 and extends south-southwestwards for 520m to the confluence of the two main tributaries at H7925 9392. Strata are inclined to the ENE at between 5-20 deg. and consist of thinly bedded, red and grey, medium-grained sandstones and brown-grey silty mudstones interbedded with fine-grained sandstones up to 0.12m thick. Towards the top of the section are sandy and shaley mudstones with a light scattering of mica and carbonaceous matter on bedding surfaces. Beds of reworked pedogenic carbonate nodules between 0.15-0.3m thick occur in a sequence of red-brown mudstones some 200m south of the ford in the river.
