Site Description
Description:
Unit 1 conglomerates are exposed along almost one half of the ASSI coastal section and extend from the Lifeboat House to a minor fault line located 400m to the south. They consist of laterally persistent beds of clast-supported conglomerate up to 1.5m thick with boulders up to 1m diameter and thin beds of parallel laminated pebbly sandstone. Towards the top of this unit cross-stratification and laterally impersistent bedding is more typical. The change in the nature of bedding and sedimentary structures is believed to reflect deposition on an alluvial fan changing from proximal sheetflood to a braided stream environment.
