Field exposure at Cloghfin, Tedd Townland, Co.Fermanagh; a unique locality and horizon of green mudstones (marked by hammer) with miospores in the Tedd Formation, Fintona Block.
Description:
The occurrence of green mudstones within the Tedd Formation at Cloghfin is unique in the Tedd Cross Roads Segment and is located some 300m above the structural base of the formation. The mudstone is about 40cm thick and is part of a sequence comprising purple-brown fine-grained sandstones and siltstones with thin layers of chocolate-brown mudstone.

The outcrop lies on the north side of a shallow seasonal pond and the strata, which dip south-southeastwards at 60 deg., are located on the south side of a low linear ridge that can be traced to the east for about 150m, and is only one of many rock ridges that are typical of this part of the segment. Well preserved small scale desiccation cracks, frequently imposed on asymmetrical ripples, are common, the latter indicating currents flowing updip, to the north.

A total of 14 samples of green mudstone from different levels in the bed were processed for miospores. Of these only 6 were productive and even those residues produced extremely sparse yields of poorly preserved miospores including the following taxa: Apiculiretusispora sp., Densosporites sp., Dibolisporites sp., Dictyotriletes sp., Emphanisporites sp., E. annulatus McGregor, ?Hymenozonotriletes sp., and Retusotriletes sp.

Based on the taxa recorded it is tentatively suggested that the assemblage is of Middle-Upper Devonian age.
