Site Description
Description:
UNDERGROUND KARST

The Reyfad-Pollnacrom-Polltullybrack cave system is developed mainly in the Knockmore Limestone Member. The regional dip is typically 10-20 degrees, varying in direction between west and south. The cave formation is predominantly aligned on two sets of fractures, trending approximately 340° and 010°. There are only a few E-W controlling joints. The horizontal part of the cave has formed between 230m and 130m amsl.

The 65m entrance shafts of Pollnacrom break through the cherty limestone near the surface into the massive Knockmore Limestones. The stream sinking at Pollnacrom then follows a joint northwest for a short distance before changing direction on to one of the 010° trending fractures which continues for almost 600m to a sump. The passage leading southwest from the shaft leads to a chamber with gypsum deposits and a mud crawl to the Heaven and Hell Series. This, in turn, connects to the upstream section of Scrapers' Passage.
