Site Description
Description:
The Pollaraftra fault scarp exposes the mudbank flank facies in cliffs along the north side of the Sillees valley, and there are a number of relict caves in the cliffs. The most significant is Garrison Cave, a steeply descending passage of phreatic origin with a vadose trench. This canyon passage has an infill of fine muds which line the floor. Further into the cave they become wet from a number of small inlets. Good soft calcite deposits and some small stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone are present.
Notes:
Garrison Cave is a feature of the Knockmore-Pollaraftra area of the Belmore, Ballintempo and Tullybrack Uplands. For general information on the systems and features of the Knockmore-Pollaraftra area, including this one, and a reference list, see site description 'Belmore, Ballintempo & Tullybrack Uplands; Knockmore-Pollaraftra'.
