Site Description
Description:
A 0.7km2 wedge of sand and sandy gravels located on the northwest slopes of Teeavan Hill at the mouth of Owenrigh channel. The deposit is up to 60m thick and consists of stacked foreset units containing beds dipping at 18ยง to the NE. Post deposition meltwater erosion along the Owenrigh channel bisected the sediments into two fragments.

At Banagher church (267600 406600) a sharp-crested ridge (0.5km long), trending NW/SE can be traced laterally into the wedge.

INTERPRETATION

The position of the ridge and the exposure at (267800 406900) of poorly-sorted boulder gravels suggests esker-type sediment supply from a high energy, turbulent glacial efflux (jet), supplying sediment directly into a proglacial lake. Foreset formation resulted from the lateral dispersion of the sand and pebble gravel component. The foreset heights at this location indicate deposition into ponded water of at least 122m O.D.

An exposure across the valley at (266800 406850) shows stacked foresets of well-sorted medium sand. This fragment forms a wooded ridge at the southern edge of the Dungiven outwash plain.
