Site Description
Description:
(see also Key Site 471 - Cumber Delta, Dungiven Basin)

A 4km2 area of flat topped sands and gravels lying immediately south of Claudy, Co. Londonderry in the bedrock depression of the upper Faughan river valley. Post-deposition fluvial erosion has formed two delta surfaces. Broadly channelised planar cross-bedded parallel and ripple laminated sand beds, dipping at 10§, 300§N are interpreted as deltaic foresets which prograded into a proglacial lake at 126m O.D. Cross-cutting cobble and pebble gravel scour and fill structures in which six ice-wedge pseudomorphs are contained are also exposed. Hummocky gravels immediately to the south of the delta surface have resulted in the formation of a raised bog and freshwater lake.
