Site Description
Highlights:
Minor stratiform sphalerite, galena and pyrite mineralization in meta-limestone .
Description:
Impure marble of the Dungiven Limestone Formation enriched in base metal sulphides (pyrite, sphalerite and galena) was previously described from this locality (Earls et al., 1996). This is of metallogenic interest as it represents one of few occurrences of carbonate-hosted stratabound sulphide mineralization in the Dalradian. Sulphide-bearing material was not found during the 1997 field visit, perhaps due to luxurious growth of vegetation along the stream. Better exposures were identified at Tamny (Key Site 547), therefore the Altinure Burn locality does not merit designation.
Importance:
This is of metallogenic interest as it represents one of few occurrences of carbonate-hosted stratabound sulphide mineralization in the Dalradian.
Conclusions:
This locality does not merit designation.
