| Highlights: | |
This site contains high quality outcrop and examples of intense polyphase deformation including tight harmonic and disharmonic ductile folds.
| Introduction: | |
Croagh Mountain is situated approximately 6km NE of Belleek in remote moorland close to the Donegal-Fermanagh border. Access is via a road and track which passes between Croagh Mountain in County Fermanagh and Breesy Hill in County Donegal (Fig. 4).
| Description: | |
The rocks on Croagh Mountain are typical of the Lough Derg Inlier (Lough Derg Group). They are mainly quartz-feldspar-mica psammites with minor pelite. Numerous, early-formed basaltic intrusions have been deformed and now form disrupted masses and augened pods of metabasite within the original sedimentary succession. Structurally, these strata form part of a large open NE plunging antiform known as the Lough Derg Antiform. They have a regionally dominant foliation, which has a consistent NNE-SSW strike, and which dips at 80°E.
