Site Description
Introduction:
Oughtmore Mountain is located approximately 8km NW of Cookstown. The site is on open ground close to the southern margin of Davagh Forest. Site access is via fenced rough pastureland from Slaght Road or from the path which skirts Beleevnamore Mountain at the southern edge of Davagh Forest (Fig. 6). The site contains a variety of structures that are broadly representative of the deformation found throughout the Central Tyrone Inlier.
Description:
Oughtmore Mountain consists of a series of weathered crags composed mainly of medium to coarse-grained grey and pinkish grey psammite and quartz-biotite schist. The coarser-grained lithologies frequently display a gneissic texture with pink K-feldspar and grey quartz forming banding and segregations. Lithological banding (probably in part reflecting original sedimentary bedding) is also visible particularly where quartz-biotite schists are interbedded with more massive psammites. Occasionally, where coarse gritty psammite is interbedded with finer-grained lithologies, graded-bedding and hence way-up of the strata is discernible (dip and younging towards the north).

The best quality outcrops at the site occur on the upper slopes of Oughtmore Mountain and extend some distance SE of the summit and for several hundred metres northeast. The main foliation dips at 10° towards the NE. There are many good examples of tight, small-scale, fold pairs with NNE-SSW trending axial traces. Directly south of the summit, early formed quartz segregation veins are deformed in a zone of tight intrafolial folds.
