Site Description
Introduction:
Ederny Quarry is situated in the townland of Aghaleague, about 1km south of Ederny (Fig. 28).

Ederny Quarry contains a major Caledonian fault with evidence that it was reactivated during the Variscan Orogeny. There are also a number of minor folds attributable to Variscan deformation.
Description:
The rocks in Ederny Quarry are limestones and shale belonging to the uppermost part of the Ballyshannon Limestone Formation (Viséan, Carboniferous). These strata include the Crockanaver Limestone Member and the stratotype for the Ederny Limestone Member. Distal equivalents of the Skea Sandstone Member (lowermost Bundoran Shale Formation) and about 3m of the Dromore Sandstone Member (lowermost member in the Mullaghmore Sandstone Formation) are also present.

The southern face of the quarry is formed from the exposed plane of the Aghaleague Fault which trends NE-SW and dips at about 50° towards the NW. This fault originated as a Caledonian structure (part of the regionally important Castle Archdale Fault Zone) and was reactivated during the Variscan (Mitchell, 1992). On the SW face of the quarry there is a rollover anticline and synclinal fold formed through reverse movement in the hanging wall of the Aghaleague Fault. This is taken as evidence of the compressive nature of the Variscan deformation.
