|---|---|
| Highlights: | |
The site contains unrivalled exposure of five of the stratigraphic formations, which form the Tyrone Group (Viséan, Lower Carboniferous). | |
| Introduction: | |
Fardross Stream is located in Fardross Forest about 3.3km SSW of Clogher Cathedral (Fig. 30). | |
| Description: | |
Within a 600m long section of the Fardross Stream there are exposures of five of the formations that constitute the Tyrone Group (Lower Carboniferous). The formations present are the Bundoran Shale, Mullaghmore Sandstone, Benbulben Shale, Glencar Limestone and the Dartry Limestone. The regional strike of the Carboniferous strata is NW-SE with dip towards the SW. The occurrence of such a diverse range of Carboniferous formations in such a relatively short and accessible stream section is unique in Northern Ireland and is due to the fact that the strata were tilted to a near vertical inclination by Variscan earth movements. The Clogher Valley Fault lies at the northern boundary of the section. This is a major fault complex which originated during late-Caledonian times and was again active during the Variscan (Mitchell, 1992). | |
