| Introduction: | |
This site is located 10km east of Dungiven and lies just NE of the Glenshane Pass (A6). A number of stream sections are accessible via a farm track north of Eden Lodge [IGR 27795 40582]. These include the Altakeeran Burn and a nameless stream to the west, and the Altron Burn (Fig. 37). This site contains evidence of post-Palaeocene, normal movement on the regionally important Tow Valley Fault (Highland Boundary Fault) which has resulted in the juxtaposition of Carboniferous, Triassic and Palaeocene strata against the much older Dalradian Supergroup.
| Description: | |
In the stream adjacent to and west of the Altakeeran Burn at [27780 40615], Triassic sandstones and thin mudstones of the Sherwood Sandstone Group dip steeply NW and are affected by small scale normal faulting. These strata are in the footwall of a normal fault that trends NE to SW; the beds have been dragged down by the faulting. The hanging wall of the fault is composed of basalts belonging to the younger Antrim Lava Series that have been downthrown to the NW. Further west in the Altron Burn, a fault bound slice of Carboniferous sandstone (Barony Glen Formation) is faulted against Dalradian schistose rocks.
